Pillow top double mattresses are deeper than ordinary mattresses and require special sheets, usually called deep pocket sheets.  Ordinary double size fitted sheets will not go over the extra depth of the pillow top mattress.  A pillow top mattress will also add additional height to your bed.

Since the pillow top only fits on one side of a double mattress, it is not possible to turn these mattresses over.  Many women flip the mattress on their beds at least twice a year, but you can’t flip a pillow top.  If you buy a mattress with a removable pillow top, you can wash it or have it cleaned depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.  This is one of the nice features of this type of mattress.

The removable pillow usually attaches to the mattress with a zipper or fasteners.  Removal and replacement of the pillow is fairly simple and results in a cleaner sleeping surface than merely flipping the mattress would provide.  Pillow top double mattresses don’t require a padded mattress cover.  If you plan to use a mattress cover, one made of ticking or vinyl should be fine, but remember to check to see if it will fit over this very deep mattress.

The pillow top gives an extra layer of padding over the coil springs in the core of most double mattresses, but a good quality flat mattresses should provide sufficient padding without a pillow top.  The greatest advantage of the pillow top is the ability to clean the part of the mattress on which you sleep.  Although you cannot flip the mattress, it is probably wise to turn it occasionally to avoid excessive wear in one spot.
